Village of the Year
The Calor Village of the Year® is held yearly and aims to reward the villages which are best at working together to boost the local quality of life. Action in rural Sussex operates as the county organiser for the competition in both East and West Sussex.
The winning villages from Sussex have the added honour of being nominated to go forward and represent their county in the prestigious Calor Village of the Year® for England competition. This gives the village the opportunity of gaining recognition at national level, as well as a share of a prize fund totalling more than £40,000.
The competition is sponsered by Calor who are the UK's leading supplier of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). In addition to Calor, sponsorship has also come from Sussex Police, The Sussex Police Authority, Sussex Community Foundation and the Sussex Association of Local Councils.
2008 Winners
This year’s competition focused on how rural villages are working together to tackle the changes and challenges of the 21st century – from activities for a greener lifestyle to harnessing new technology to improve communications and create local employment opportunities.
Fishbourne and Fairlight were chosen as the County winners this year and have both gone forward to the Calor National Village of the Year Final to be announced in December.
Forest Row and Southwater were awarded prizes under thelarger village category and Ticehurst and Ashurst Wood received commendations as runners up.

Details of how to enter for the 2009 competition will be available on this page in January.
