Sunday 27 September - Apple Day at Stanmer Park
Come and celebrate the apple harvest at Stanmer Park Apple Day. You can have a go at apple bobbing, making juice on a traditional press, go on an orchard tour, or buy some rare Sussex apple trees. Leading UK fruit historian and pomologist, Joan morgan, will be on hand to identify your apples (bring three apples and some leaves). Apple cakes and puddings are served in the farmhouse gardens, and local chefs provide apple cookery demonstartions and lunches. Choirs, dancers and musicians will keep you entertained all day. If you have any information or experience of fruit-growing in Sussex in the past please make yourself known to the organisers- we would love to hear from you.
Apple day is part of Local Fruit Futures, a three year project funded by the Lottery, led by Brighton Permaculture Trust and managed by AirS. The project will enable small orchards to be planted across all of Sussex in schools and communities, our fruit history (and future) to be researched and publicised, the training of hundreds of people in fruit growing skills and fruit cookery and will ensure the future of rare Sussex apple varities ( see www.brightonpermaculture.co.uk for more details).
