Action In Rural Sussex

Research & Consultancy

In order to inform both its own actions and those of other others, Action in rural Sussex undertakes research and consultancy on a diverse array of issues. This primarily focuses on identifying and exploring the problems experienced by people living in the Sussex countryside and identifying potential solutions.

Action in rural Sussex uses the findings from its research as the basis for evidence-based contributions to national, regional and local policy development, to analyse the effects of policy implementation and in identifying how and where policy responses may be required to assist rural areas.

What do we do?

As well as carrying out its own programme of research, Action in rural Sussex is regularly employed on a consultancy basis by agencies, organisations and communities to undertake research work both within and outside of Sussex. The findings of which have been used to inform strategic planning and delivery mechanisms as well as assisting with advocacy and lobbying on behalf of rural areas.

Why do we do it?

Gaps in knowledge
There are many things about rural areas of Sussex that we do not know, or that cannot be identified through mainstream data sources or statistics. Therefore, research work is undertaken to fill the gaps in knowledge and understanding held both by Action in rural Sussex itself, as well as those responsible for providing services to those in the countryside.

Effects on rural communities
One of the key areas of research is an evaluation of the effects of policy and service changes on rural communities. Whilst ‘rural’ may be considered when decisions are made, the effects on rural areas of implementing these decisions can have both predictable and unpredictable consequences. Assessing the short, medium and long-term impact of changes is an on-going area of research.

Rural Proofing
A key role undertaken by Action in rural Sussex is the rural proofing of policies and strategies. This process is undertaken to ensure that the needs of rural people are considered at all times, it involves a rigorous evaluation of evidence, language and decision-making criteria to ensure that these do not prejudice decisions/processes against rural areas.

Who are we?

Action in rural Sussex staff possess a diverse range of both research and specialist skills. These include:- research methodologies, surveying techniques, data analysis and policy development/review.
