Your Bus Your Call is a Healthy Living Centre operating in the Lewes District to improve the health and wellbeing of young people who live rurally. Healthy Living Centres are an initiative funded by the Big Lottery Fund and aim to overcome and reduce health inequalities and problems with access to services. The HLC is a multi-agency partnership that includes Lewes District Council, Sussex Downs and Weald PCT, East Sussex County Council Youth Development Service, Sussex Police and other local stakeholders. The project is managed by Action in rural Sussex as lead and accountable agency. The project has been funded for 5 years and is currently in the third year of funding.

The HLC combines expertise in health promotion with skills in community development work with young people to enable rural communities and young people to identify their own barriers to wellbeing, and how these may be overcome. Our work comprises several elements, and the programme is a dynamic one. Our key delivery mechanism is a converted library bus equipped for work with young people. The bus currently visits one school and three villages each week offering health promotion and youth work support and work on young people's social action. We prefer to take a long-term approach to working with communities and see young people's wellbeing within the context of their broader environment. As well as working on health issues that are pertinent for young people such as substance use, sexual and mental health, relationships and healthy lifestyles we aim to tackle the social determinants of health amongst our users. Our Community Development approach encourages contact with adult members of communities and work with young people on local involvement and engagement.
