Some of what we’ve done so far…
Helped get a group of young women to set up a fund raising group for a youth shelter
Listened to young people and helped them to meet in a safer meeting place
Helped a group of young people write to their Parish Council. They wanted to ask for what they wanted in their village … not what others thought they wanted!
Helped groups of youth leaders set up youth groups and learn how to include young people in the management team and run the groups
Buzz has worked with a group of young women aged 16 plus to re-establish contact with a local volunteer after they were excluded from a youth group in their village. They restarted working with an adult youth club volunteer and formed a fund raising group. They went on to raise money towards the youth shelter they sought in their village.
The Buzz Project has completed consultations with young people both formally on behalf of Parish Councils and on one occasion on a railway platform with marginalised young people who were at risk from their choice of a meeting place along side a commuter railway line.
The needs of lively young but isolated social housing communities can be at variance with the quiet environment of retirement homes of the rural South East. Buzz has worked with a Social Housing Group and it officers to voice their community’s needs to their Parish Council and to seek the opportunity to be an equal part of the community.
The legalistic culture that is growing in our society is in danger of becoming a barrier to the recruitment and retention of volunteers. Buzz has responded to requests for training from volunteers working with young people in rural youth groups. The training, confidence building, reassurance and information sheets that have been developed are now available to be rolled out to volunteer youth workers in their own communities.
Buzz has not only offered support to partner projects at Action in rural Sussex but has also worked with other voluntary and professional agencies to provide a youth related specialism through out East Sussex.
