Chiara Vagnarelli: Village Agent
I was born and brought up in a small village in Snowdonia in North Wales in the 1960s. A fluent Welsh speaker, I worked on a local farm, in the tourist industry and retail, before moving to Staffordshire to study a B.Ed. in Youth and Community Work in my 20s.
On qualifying I worked as a youth and community development worker in inner city Liverpool and Manchester. I also lived in Greece and Portugal volunteering on conservation projects.
In 2000 I moved to Sussex, where I continued to work in community development. I joined the staff team of Action in rural Sussex in 2015 as a Village Agent, where I have enjoyed returning to working in rural communities.
The village I was brought up in Snowdonia has declined over the years, losing its village shop, post office, pub and garage, as well as suffering from poor transport links. So ensuring that villages in Wealden and Lewes and District continue to thrive and be sustainable is something I am very passionate about.
I am also a keen gardener and bird-watcher, and have a small business as a ceramic artist.
