Terms and Conditions

By entering the competition you are deemed to accept these Terms and Conditions. If you are under 18 years of age you are able to submit entries to our youth category, but you must have a parent or legal guardian’s permission to enter.

Closing date

The competition will open on Monday 16th August 2021.

The competition will close at midnight on Sunday 28th November 2021.

Entries received after this deadline will not be accepted.

No responsibility is accepted for network, computer hardware or software failures of any kind which may restrict or delay the sending of your entry. No responsibility is accepted by AirS for entries lost, delayed, misdirected, incomplete, or which cannot be entered for technical or other reasons. Proof of entry is not proof of receipt.

Entry detail/ Images

All photos must be taken in Sussex.

Competition entries must be submitted using the link:

Entries will not be accepted by post or hand. Entries must be a JPEG file of at least 1 MB and less that 16 MB.

You must supply us with a digital JPEG version of the photo. Entries may be in black and white or in colour.

Retouching/manipulation of digital images is accepted provided that all works are your own original works and not copies of other people’s works.

You may not enter an image that has been published elsewhere or has won a prize in any other photographic competition.

Your photography must have been taken at some point during 2021 in Sussex, and should aim to reflect the theme of Sussex’s Wonderful Woodland.

You can only submit one photograph per person for this photo competition.

Your entry details must specify where the image was taken. If possible the name of the wood, and the nearest village. If you don’t know the name of the wood that’s OK, just tell us the nearest village or landmark.


Shortlisting and judging will take place during the first week in December, with the winner being announced by Friday 10th December 2021.

AirS may change the advertised panel of judges in the event of circumstances outside of its control.

The judges’ decision is final and no discussion or correspondence will be entered into in respect of their decision.


In the 10 and under category the prize for 1st place is a family day out at Washbrooks farm. The 2nd place prize is a copy of the book The Secret Life of Trees by Moira Butterfield kindly donated by Bags of Books in Lewes. The 3rd place prize is a wildflower seed pack to plant in the garden.

In the 11-17 category the prize for 1st place is a family day out at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre. The 2nd place prize is a signed copy of the book This Land is Our Land kindly donated by Marion Shoard . The 3rd place prize is a wildflower seed pack to plant in the garden.

In the 18+ category the prize for 1st place is a family day out at the Sussex Prairie Gardens. The 2nd place prize is a signed copy of the book Wanderland kindly donated by Jini Reddy . The 3rd place prize is a wildflower seed pack to plant in the garden.

AirS may change the advertised prizes in the event of circumstances outside of its control.

The prizes are non-transferrable and cannot be exchanged for their cash value.

Once the winner has been notified they will need to provide contact details including name, age, email address, home address and photographic proof of identity to claim their prize.

AirS will do their best to get the prize to the winner by post. In this event we cannot take any responsibility if any prizes are lost en route.

If the winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made, AirS reserves the right to either offer the prizes to another entrant or to re-offer any prizes in any future competition.

By entering the competition you release AirS from and against all claims and damages arising from or in connection with your participation in the competition. You agree to comply with these Rules of Entry.

Youth competition

Entrants under the age of 18 must get a parent/legal guardian to give permission to enter the competition.

Entrants to the under 10s category must be aged 10 years or under on Sunday 28th November 2021.

Entrants to the 11-17 category must be older than 11 and younger than 17 on Sunday 28th November 2021.

By completing the entry form the parent/legal guardian gives permission for the entrant to take part and be identified in the competition and for the information on the entry form to be used for all stages of the competition, should the entrant progress. By completing the form they also give permission for the AirS Media and Public Relations team to make contact with the parent or legal guardian to discuss public relations opportunities.

Entrant’s responsibilities

You are responsible for informing AirS of any changes to the information entered, in particular any change of contact details at any time before the closing date.

You will not submit any photographs that are obscene, vulgar, pornographic, hateful, threatening, racist, sexist, discriminatory, or which otherwise violate any local, national or international laws. No nudity is allowed. If your image features a child or children you must have their parents’/legal guardian(s)’ legal consent for the image to be publicised online or in hard copy. AirS will ultimately decide if something is appropriate or not and whether is eligible to be entered into the competition.

Entrants must not have breached any laws while taking their photographs.

All images must be taken in Sussex (East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton and Hove). Images of wildlife must be taken in the natural environment or in their natural habitat. Images of wildlife taken in captivity, domesticated or restrained in any way, will not be eligible, neither will images of species that have been artificially cultivated or reared.

The welfare of the wildlife subject of any photograph is of greater importance than the photograph itself – entries which show evidence of undue disturbance or stress imparted on the subject by the photographer will be disqualified. Please take care to avoid damage to the environment in the process of your photography.

AirS staff members and their immediate family may enter this competition but will not be eligible to win a prize.

All entries must be received by the advertised closing dates and times. Late, illegible, incomplete, defaced or corrupt entries will not be accepted. Entries must not be sent through agencies or third parties.

Entries without the required information (full name, contact number, category being entered, location of photograph) may not be considered.

Photos must be without a signature, watermark or date/time.

Copyright and usage

By submitting images to the competition, you confirm and warrant that:

  • You are the sole author your entry and that it is your original work, and must not infringe the rights of any other party.
  • You have sole copyright and any other intellectual property rights of your image
  • Any photographs found to be copied from any other source or from copyrighted material not belonging to the entrant will be immediately excluded from the competition.
  • You have the permission of those pictures in the image (or where the image shows any persons under 18, the consent of the parent or legal guardian) for the usage rights required in the section on licensing below will indemnify AirS against any claims made by third parties in respect of such infringement.

AirS will use your images in relation to this competition only. We do not wish to subsume your copyright to your image in the longer term. Therefore, by entering the competition, you grant AirS a non-exclusive, irrevocable licence to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, on any media, the image, in  relation to publicising this competition. This may include but is not limited to:

  • News coverage of the competition
  • AirS newsletter/bulletin
  • AirS website
  • AirS Facebook page
  • AirS Twitter feed
  • AirS Instagram feed
  • Publications- such as leaflets and annual reports
  • For us in press releases promoting AirS and/or promoting the competition.

The photographer must be the only author and owner of the copyright of the photograph entered in to the competition. You will retain full copyright for your image and, wherever possible, will be credited if your image is published by AirS. Failure to publish a credit due to error or oversight shall not be deemed a breach of this condition.

Please note that by entering the competition you are giving consent for AirS to process your information for the purpose of administrating the competition. We will contact you if your photograph wins the competition or is selected for inclusion in our photo library.

AirS may in the future contact you with carefully selected information about woodlands or photography in Sussex. You may unsubscribe from these emails at any time.

We will not share your information with any third part without your consent, unless we are required to do so by law. Your rights are set out in our Data Protection Guide which you can find here .

AirS reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition, the rules and the terms and conditions of entry at any time without prior notice. Any changes will be posted either within these terms and conditions or in the competition details.
