Village Halls Week – 20th to 26th January 2020
What is Village Halls Week?
Village Halls Week is an annual and national celebration of rural community spaces and the people whose time and dedication keep them going. The goal is to raise the profile of both community spaces and volunteering to local people and organisations in order to encourage participation and involvement.
You can use this week as an opportunity to reward volunteers, try out new and innovative activities, recruit trustees but in general draw attention wider to the day-to-day activity of your building, both in the local community and further afield.
Village Halls Week in 2020 will be the third year that it has run. It has become a powerful means of sharing publicly the fantastic work of those who run village halls and community centres and the important activities they host.
National examples and those from within Sussex have illustrated that running activities during the week can draw attention to your facility and encourage them to use it or play a role in running it. This message is strengthened by the increased attention that is gained through lots of facilities acting collaboratively.
Last year saw 15 events and halls across the country featured on 16 BBC channels, BBC Radio Sussex being one of these.
How to participate:
Whilst we are keen for buildings to develop their own activities during this week, we are also encouraging participation in two nation-wide initiatives:
Thursday 23rd January 2020 – Throw Back Thursday
Use social media to highlight your hall’s history
What has your hall achieved in the past? How did it look at the Jubilee or Millennium? Why not reflect, dig out some photos and let others know. Why not recruit the local history group to find out more?
If your hall has an interesting or colourful past or simply wishes to reminisce, then participate on this day and use #throwbackthursday on your social media channels.
Saturday 25th January 2020 – National Open Day
Join the celebration by holding an open day for village halls week
On this day, halls across the country will open their doors to showcase their events and activities. Why not use this as an opportunity to engage with residents and users by developing something special….perhaps hall users could use this opportunity to run taster events?
