West Sussex Village Halls Conference

Yesterday saw 50 representatives attend the West Sussex Village Halls Conference held at The Ashington Centre to hear from expert speakers on a range of topics, network with each other and to explore how support may be offered to them moving forwards.

The speakers and topics covered included:

The challenges facing community buildings

Teresa Gittins,  Head of Services, Action in rural Sussex

Providing a safe environment – what are the legal requirements, what is best practice

Abigail Link, Manager, Business Fire Safety, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service

The role of trustees and adapting to changing needs. Focus on constitution and legal status issues

Louise Beaton, Village Halls Advisor & ACRE Trustee

Any Questions
This was followed by an Any Questions session, with attendees having the opportunity to pose questions to the panel made up of members of the Sussex Community Buildings Advisory Group (SCBAG). This proved popular and questions were posed on a range of themes, which were responded to and allowed the sharing of key information.

In the final session, attendees were provided with an opportunity to attend one of the three workshops which ran in parallel. These covered issues that have been identified as priorities based on enquiries received. The workshops included:

  • Marketing and promoting your hall. Faustina Bayo, Community Development Officer, Action in rural Sussex
  • Systems and processes to put in place a safe environment. Alan West, Chairman, Ringmer Village Hall
